6th Annual Civic Engagement Institute for Youth
Wednesday, April 19, 2017 4:00-7:00 pm
Thursday, April 20, 2017 9:00 am -5:00 pm
Young people can be a powerful force for change! As future community, state and national leaders, young people have innovative ideas on how to solve the societal issues facing their communities. However, they often lack the understanding and skills to put their ideas to action. Simply, young people are often regarded as beneficiaries of public policy, not active participants in the process. Civic Engagement Institute for Youth is designed to educate and empower high school sophomores and juniors through the policymaking process.
The Civic Engagement Institute for Youth is designed to engage students in the democratic process and teach best practices of civic engagement. During the institute students from throughout the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast LA service area (Franklin, Lincoln, Morehouse, Ouachita & Union Parishes) will work together to identify issues, share ideas and design solutions to impact real change! On Day 2, their proposal will be presented to a panel of community leaders and policymakers.
Sponsored by CenturyLink & Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund, this 2 day event brings high school sophomores and juniors from Northeast LA together and serves as a forum to improve communication skills, identify community issues and empower students. Meals, snacks and door prizes will be provided! This event is free of charge for participants, however transportation is NOT provided. **NOTE: Students will be requested to receive an excused absence from school to attend this special event**
